[ religion... ]

sooooooo... i was raised catholic, went to a catholic school but we seldom went as a family to church, in fact i can probably count the number of times we did on one hand... my dad would tuck us in at night & listen to our prayers...

when i emigrated, with my parents (my mum [mom] is 100% italian) to a very small village in italy at the age of 15 & it was a whole other story... everything revolved around the church, religion is in everything...

after i returned to the uk i didn't continue going to church ~ except christmas & for the usual activities that my dad likes to call 'hatching, matching & dispatching...'

then i found myself living in the states & engaged to an agnostic ~ it didn't cross my mind for a moment that we would marry in a church.

on a visit to my mum we were exploring the amalfi coast & as i ran up the 64 steps to this gorgeous cathedral i said now this is a church to get married in!! 6 seconds later my mum emerges from the church saying you can!!! what! nooooooo we can't, but apparently we can & could!! it involved me registering at my local parish, lots of paperwork & my now husband being a really great sport about the whole thing!! from meeting with the priest, at our local parish, for all the paperwork i got to know & really like this guy!! & felt compelled to go on sundays & i have to say i started to enjoy going... sometimes i'd sit there listening to the sermon & think ??? no way... but for the most part there was a nice message & a feeling of community...

believe it or not i even started being a lector...

everything was good until... i went, heavily pregnant with my first son, to the baptism classes & this woman (running the class) said something unforgivable about hurricane katrina... it took every ounce of my husbands being to not walk out & i'm surprised we could see across the room from steam that his nostrils were generating!

then there was the fact that we had very carefully picked out the god parents ~ we chose the most amazing couple & we would want only them to take over from us... but no we weren't allowed by this church... & were told that they would pick out people for us...

needless to say the actual god parents are the only ones we adore (we got around it) & i started backing away from my religious love affair...

which leads me to today... we were in one of my most favorite places on earth... dragonfly farms :) i'm perusing the beautiful christmas ornaments... when my son oscar shouts out 'mummy... that's kevin...' intrigued by what he meant... i go over to where he's standing & say 'where darling?' oscar points & i follow his finger to a beautiful wooden carved nativity... he's pointing at joseph!!! seriously?! i started laughing... mostly because i found it funny (where did he get kevin from!!!) & the slightly nervously because i should be having a religious conversation...

wish me luck!!

kevin...

[ october in nj!! ]

sooooooo... it was october 10th yesterday & there was no school ~ thank you mr columbus :)

the forecast was beautiful ~ so i took the boys to the beach! who would have thought we'd be paddling in october, the water was fantastic.

a great time was had by all... except for a minor detail...  flynn buried oscar's lightning mcqueen frisbee (but to be honest he never played with it, i brought it along) resulting in all of us digging around the beach for ages trying to locate it... to the dramatic tune of oscar's 'i'll never see it again...' & unfortunately he's right...

[ a trip to jfk airport! ]

sooooooo... today my mum (mom) & cousin came to visit from italy!!! yippeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!

i was up really late tidying up the night before, doing washing, making up beds  etc etc. i had a really busy day today: a dr's appoint @ 8.15 which we were a bit late to because flynn, (my 4 year old son) couldn't find one of his shoes... i know i keep saying this, but this is when i'm so thankful that humans have two feet... seriously... it's hard enough sometimes finding a pair of something...

dr's appointment took longer than i expected arhhhhh i don't have time for this today....

squeeze in a drop off for a client

pharmacy pick up... left boys watching tv in car to run in but forgot we have changed insurance, so had to run back to car for new card & then they had to input the new info & run the prescriptions again... i had to stop myself from jogging on the spot & saying go faster!!! then i ended up paying $45 for a minuscule tube of cream for my eye! no generic grrrrrrrr

shopping trip to 3 stores... first one trader joes. flynn was napping & oscar (my 5 3/4 year old son) was pushing him in the stroller. it was literally 40 winks, so i closed the stroller & after trying every which way to fit it under the shopping trolley (cart) i balanced it on the top... which was fine, i just needed a bit more clearance to manoeuvre... this very loud, very blonde, very overweight lady picked the wrong to be strutting her stuff around the wine section trying to sound oh so knowledgeable about every single bottle... somehow it didn't matter how many times i managed to get around her she got in front of me again!!! i just wanted to tell her to keep still!! of at least take your hands off your hips pleaseeeeeee there isn't enough room for that!

next to whole foods & then wegmans. oscar wanted to go in w kids!! but flynn didn't ~ he said the bracelet was spiky... i was trying to convince him that that was fixable but he wasn't having any of it. so i think to myself i need a coffee. i get in the line & i don't understand what the person in front of me ordered but it was taking forever!! i could have prepared it faster with my hands tied behind my back.

i begin rushing round when flynn says... mum (mom) i need to go poo. nooooooooooooo!!!! seriously!!! i'm keeping calm... after i've asked him 3 times are you sure we head to the toilets (restrooms). i park the shopping trolley (cart) only to get glared at by this guy because i am in front of the newspapers & he wanted one of them.

after wiping down the toilet (i can't tell you how many public toilets i've cleaned since i've had kids) i put 2 seat covers on & lift flynn on. i wait outside as instructed by him... & wait 10 minutes... i swear he'd be whistling or reading the newspaper if he could do either. i ask him a couple of times if he's done ~ no not yet!!!!

when what seemed like an eternity has past flynn announces that he doesn't really need to go...

shopping done ~ rush home, put shopping away, vacuum, tidy porch, get towels out, get flowers ready to give guests... then LEAVE LEAVE LEAVE!!!!

i have not left the 3 hours my lovely friend jackie said... i wanted to but i just didn't get enough done...  :(

my phone is on charge in the car, got my gps leading me. every single traffic light is red, everyone is driving miss daisy... COME ON ~ i got to get me to jfk!!!

once over the verrazano bridge my gps dies ~ so i take my phone off charge & plug in my gps. nothing happens... i look at the plug & the end has broken off... nooooooooooooooooo!! i'm quite scared now ~ i have no idea what road to take... i have absolutely no room for error... noooooooo!! i call my friend, basit, but no answer.... so i'm guessing which road... while looking for the pieces of the gps charger on the car floor. i find a metal end piece, the broken piece of plastic that looked like it held it all together (i'd just lost my one of those!!!) a small glass tube with silver ends. still driving i'm trying to assemble. i need something to hold it together... realizing that i cleaned out my car that day i rack my brain as to what i can use... i kept thinking how people always stick things together with chewing gum on the tv!!!

then i suddenly remember the stickers oscar was given @ w kids & ask him for them. i tear them up into strips & stick them around the charger & plug it in. guess what... IT WORKED!!! i could believe it!!! WOO HOO!!! what a crap road the belt parkway is... i mean seriously. i kept switching lanes in the hope i'd pick a winner ~ but no. time is ticking ~ i so want to get there & be waiting @ the gate. i call my husband, mike, who is in germany & tells me about flight tracker ~ arhhhhhhh the website was all wrong!! they've landed!!

STRESS STRESS STRESS ~ lets go traffic. i finally arrive, park the car with almost a handbrake turn!! grab the boys and go to the terminal, just as they were coming out of the airport (not quite sure where they were going!!)

big hugs all round!! & safe journey home ~ HOORAY!!!!!!!!!! (eye cream ~ best $45 spent!)

[ the adventures of sesame place 2011 ~ part 1 ]

sooooooo... here we are in july ~ i have been exposed to some of the worst tattoos i have every had the misfortune of seeing... being paraded around on very unfit bodies, clad only in over stretched lycra & not to mention the moles... oh the moles!!! yes you got it! we got season passes for sesame place!!

i'm no dermatologist but seriously i really hope that a lot of people are having their moley moley moley's checked out because i have spied some highly suspicious looking ones... & i'm not trying to... they're waving from the people's backs walking in front of me...

i really really try to not look at situations that really shouldn't be out on public display but i find myself saying don't look, don't look... rubber neck ~ nooooooo my eyes my eyes... why do i do that?

don't get me wrong ~ there are some amazing looking people there too, but unfortunately the ratio is far from even & for some reason they don't get burnt into my retinas as easily...

the boys LOVE LOVE LOVE it here & once i get over the initial sting (brazilian style) of the pass prices it is fun, very clean & easy.

there are climbing nets, which have other finer mesh ones underneath them to stop any falling items landing on innocent passers by... there's the usual things you'd expect to see like loose change, popsicle sticks... then there's the yukky stuff like used band aids... but, this last time, i had to giggle! there was some one's dentures!!! can you imagine being the person who has to clean that net out!!! they could write a book! or that could be an interesting attraction 'net findings'.

oscar pointed out that bert & ernie have zippers in the backs ~ hehehehe!

last friday was very interesting! i didn't check the weather, when we got to the entrance it was pouring with rain!! we were soaked right though & out the other side... we went to see a couple of shows & then on the tubes. (nothing else was open) the boys thought it was hilarious that when i went over the bubbles my shorts filled up with air, it was pretty funny, even the life guard was laughing... i could'nt get it out though... so i just rested my elbows on them...  then we bump into our pharmacist... i say 'nice weather for it' he obvisiously didn't understand me & replied 'no i'm the pharmacist'...glancing at my inflatable shorts...

[ more costen library! ]

sooooooo... i know i've blogged about the costen children's library, before... ( previous post )

but... i can't get enough of this place!! & felt compelled to share my sons latest creations! i'm thinking of making this a permanent spot & for all you brits i'd like you to have tony hart's gallery music playing in your head as you peruse these master pieces!

i do have to fess up though, that i think i get the most excited (out of everyone in the whole library) when dr dana reveals what we will be making after she's read the story! the week it was the puppets i'm pretty sure i let a gasp! hahaha. i wonder how long it will be before the boys won't want to come... so i'm going to enjoy it while it lasts!

october 22 2010 ~ monkeys with matching tee shirts
october 15 2010 ~ super hero puppets

[ costen children's library ~ princeton ]

sooooooo... i have just discovered the costen children's library, located on the main floor of princeton university's firestone library, at the corner of nassau street & washington road.

why have i not found out about this before?? it's FABULOUS!!!! & even better it's FREE!! music to my ears!

i took my boys oscar (4 & three quarters) & flynn (3) there yesterday, for story time & a craft.

i really enjoyed the craft! ~ come on lets face it, that's very important as i always end up finishing them... this octopus mask was one i could really get my teeth into!!

just to digress about 2 years ago i was worried about oscar's concentration span. i'd think up these great things to make & 2 minutes into them he would be wanting to do something else...

i was that concerned i told my pediatrician, (oscar's my first, i'm a little less neurotic now!) who sent him to be evaluated.

i remember having to hand oscar over to this team of ladies & go answer lots of questions... i was convinced i'd done something wrong & this had stunted my sons 'art' development.

after what seemed like ages i was called back to join oscar & receive the verdict. oscar was absolutely fine for his age & i was politely told that 'apparently he's just not into arts & crafts'... WHAT!!! my hearing must be temporarily failing me because i thought they'd said that oscar wasn't into arts & crafts!!!

how on earth could that be!! my husband & i are both designers...it's like saying a particular squirrel doesn't like nuts!!..... (i wonder if that's possible, or could you imagine some poor squirrel out there having a nut allergy!!!)

i thought the genes this poor kid has inherited must be design loaded...

so anyway ~ the costen library is an amazing place to take your children, if you haven't already gone i'd urge you to go. if you have why didn't you tell me about it!! you can sign up to receive notifications about upcoming events.

[ I'M ANGRY WITH 6 FLAGS SAFARI!!! ]

sooooooo... my beautiful boy, flynn, will be 3 next week, oh how the time flies... as usual i'm planning to get as much as possible into a day!! we wanted to take him to 6 flags safari, neither of my boys has been on one before, so hopefully a fun time will be had by all!

i read that they open at 9am... but i suddenly thought... let me just ring to make sure if that would be a good time to come... i want my boys to experience some animal action & wasn't sure if everyone would be up yet...

i call the number & speak to the operator ~ she says that no-one has any idea what time the animals get up, there is no good time to come.

so i ask do the animals sleep at night? she replies i have no idea....

because, sadly for her, that answer doesn't satisfy me & i stay on the phone she transfers me to someone else.

this was a much friendlier person ~ who thought i had a very good question, YEAH!!, but didn't know the answer, BOO!!

so she transfers me to another 'lady'

firstly ~ i was shocked by her curtness... the whole attitude was what the hell are you bothering me for, i have no intention of helping you & basically let me as rude & ignorant to you as possible to reinforce that!!

i politely asked my question... is there a better time to come in the day where the animals are more lively??

she tells me that 'ma'am' (oooooooooooo i love being called 'ma'am!!! ;) 'ma'am this is a safari, not a zoo. we don't know the animals behaviour.'

YIKES! i repeated what she's said to make sure i heard her right... really, no-one has any idea about the animals behaviour.

that's right.

i told her i found that really sad.... you are meant to be a safari, taking care of these animals ~ yet no-one has any idea (& by the sounds of it doesn't even care) about them...

& also she 'informs' me there is no-one who will know.

(this doesn't instill me with any confidence whatsoever. so there could be some crazy rhino out there snorting, running round in circles about to charge a car or a sick giraffe lying on it's back with it's legs in the air & no-one would think that that was unusual because no-one knows any of the behavioural habits of the animals they are meant to be taking care of!!)

she says ~ this is the information desk (OH!!! i must be really stupid!! where i come from, that's ENGLAND, please cue the song 'land of hope & glory', an information desk would be where you were given information... which i'm sure they hope, would reflect kindly on their business, be friendly~ish & maybe even if they don't have the answer find something out...) but apparently 6 flags safari doesn't give a toss about any of that!!

anyone got any ideas what to do as a family activity for a 3rd birthday???

[ oh ikea! ]

sooooooo... my boys, 2 & 4,  LOVE going to ikea! not sure how long this will last but it can be very handy although i took them to the liberty science museum the other day & they were VERY disappointed when we drove straight past... mmmmm maybe they like it a bit too much.

we arrive just in time for a meatball lunch! YEAH!!! got to say love their meatballs & the gravy ~ but what is their obsession with those lingonberries!! just looked them up ~ full of vitamin c, that's good.

so i'm trying to manoeuvre 2 very excited boys, a shopping cart & one of those tray carts with our food on around to an empty table ~ how tricky it is that all of these are wanting to go in different directions, 'luckily' my toes are managing to control some of the deviation...

i'd just got everyone settled, things shared out & cut up, when nearly potty trained flynn, 2, makes the 'i'm doing a poo face'!!! no no no no no!! flynn you can't do poo you don't have a diaper [nappy] on. his response was 'i done it!'

expecting to feel a 'hard ball' through his trousers (he hadn't been for a couple of days) i retracted a moist hand... i look down & a thick lumpy 'gravy' was running out of the bottom of his trousers forming a delightfully large puddle on the floor.

there was a very 'stuffily clean' family of four at the table next to us & i hear the mother asking what is that? i was about to answer using every word i knew for it (keeping a smile of course), but the question wasn't directed at me!

flynn won't go on the toilet when we are out so i bring a plastic potty with me, so i grab that bag & pull out the roll of kitchen towels & clorox spray anywhere. (i LOVE that stuff!! it's a god send!!)*

i literally use the whole roll wiping this mess up & squeeze what i can out of the bottom of his trousers so i'm hoping i won't leave a trail to the bathroom..

all the ikea staff disappeared (can i blame them!! i think i would have got the first flight over to sweden to go lingonberry picking if i could!) i did do a really good job cleaning it up though ~ even if i do say so myself. finally i spot this lady & explain to her that i need to take my boys to the bathroom could she please not clear our food, ok... so i do my best slow talking & hand signs i can to try & bridge the language barrier!

i whisk flynn up, butt in the air & rush into the bathroom ~ gave him a 'pack of wipes' bath! change his clothes & give them both big hugs & kisses. oscar was a very good helper after i explained to him maybe 10 times that yes it stinks, every ones does, & it's not helping that you keep pointing that out...

we go back to the restaurant to happily find our food was still there... the very nice lady had covered it all with napkins...

got to say those meatballs are good cold too!! we finished eating & i suddenly realized why she'd covered the food... there were a couple of big buzzy yukky flies bombing around... probably signalled by my sons 'gravy'!!!

exhausted (me that is!) ~ the boys want to go in the ball pit... great i think, i'm going to test out a mattress for 20 minutes!! or minimum a couch!!!

had to wait 20 minutes to sign them in & the 'stuffy mother' was in front of me in line... i'm surprised she stayed!!)  (& i think i bumped into her at least 8 times around the store!)

off they went ~ i take a lovely deep breath & walk round to the couches... when loud speakers go off in stores oscar always says the ceiling is talking!! well the ceiling was asking me to return to the ball pit... flynn was waiting by the door... didn't want to stay. off we went back to the couches & there it is again... the ceiling asking me to go back... oscar didn't want to stay either, oh well!

my boys love to turn all the lamps off in the lighting section ~ oh the fun you can have! but ikea ALWAYS has to have the last laugh! it ran out of frozen yogurts while we were in line! we'll be back!! (hopefully without gravy!!)

[ FREE children's museum passes! ]

sooooooo... my kids love going to museums, i've just found out about this & am very excited! it's the association of children's museums reciprocal program (ACM).

basically if you buy an annual family membership that costs around $130 (which is tax-deductible) at any children's museum that participates in this program you'll get free admission to all the others!

me being the suspicious person that i am (must be the italian in me!!) made a few phone calls to try & find a catch! but as long as you check with the museum you are buying the membership from that they are in the program & your pass has ACM on it somewhere, either printed or a sticker all the other museums should allow at least 4 people from your household in for FREE! music to my ears!!

& there are around 165 nationwide you'll have access to!

you can see who participates here:

http://www.childrensmuseums.org/visit/reciprocal.htm#acmreciprocalprogramparticipants

& if this is one of those things that everyone already knew about... why didn't you tell me!!?!

[ sonic ]

sooooooo... the boys & i went on a road trip. it was coming up to lunch time & i was really really hoping that there would be a wegmans on route...  but my tom tom couldn't find one...

the usual signs went sailing past.... mc d's, exxon, wendy's etc etc... then i spied one for sonic ~ i remember a couple of people telling me how good it was & how everything was delivered on roller skates! i thought the boys would denitely get a kick out of that & me too for that matter!

so we pull off the road & park up. there was a place to eat outside & we perused the menu board. my first question: what are tots?? i've lived here for 10 years & my only recollection of tots was it being mentioned on napeoleon dyamite. i would have skipped the whole tot thing ~ but i had read it aloud & oscar 4, wanted to know what they were ~ on repeat mode...

i look around the only other people there are 2 army guys who inform me that they are like hash browns.

ready to order! i press the button & read off what we want. while we wait i explain the whole roller skate thing to the boys & they are getting excited.

the place starts to fill up... strangely...all the guys were ordering with their legs really wide apart to get lower to the place where you speak... oscar keeps shouting look that guy is doing the splits & that one too...

our order is walked over to our table... my boys look at me like i'm crazy!! i asked where the skates were & am told this is her first week, but there is a guy inside who has a pair & she'll send him out ~ cool!! not so cool... i have no fork to eat my salad, yes i am one those crazy people that eats salad at a fast food place!! there doesn't appear to be a door in for non-staff... so after hestiating a bit i press the order button again...

another girl walks out & says that one of the wheels on his skates is loose & he's trying to fix it... is this going to get any harder...

of course it is!! less than one second after the door closes behind her oscar wants ketchup please mom, ketchup, ketchup please, ketchup mom, i need ketchup... pleeeease. i have to press the order button again... bet they're loving us inside!!

someone else walks out with the ketchup. then... & i need to do a ta-da here!! this guy comes whooshing round our table on skates!!! YEAH!!! he asks if we need anything else... the boys start doing a continuous scream as loud as they can!! sorry everyone trying to have a quiet lunch ~ hahahaha!!

& they scream everytime they saw that guy from then on!! excellent!

i really wanted to go potty!  but was too embarrassed to ask anyone if they knew where the restrooms were & there was noway i was pressing that button again!

personally i found the whole experience pretty awkward! but i'll give them 11 out of 10 for effort!

[ stupid elmo! ]

sooooooo... a lovely friend of mine bought the boys passes to sesame place for their birthdays. (it's a sesame street theme park, with lots of water play) i confess i have been i think twice... but yesterday, i thought, what a beautiful day it will be today & asked the boys if they wanted to go! i swear they would have done back flips if they could! they were MEGA MEGA excited!! they call it elmo slides.

so most of yesterday was spent discussing this adventure, what we were going to take with us, what we were going to ride on etc etc & that it was going to be tomorrow... you have to go to sleep all night first & then we'll go!

the first thing that comes out of their mouths this morning was 'we've been asleep can we go to elmo slides now!!'

we packed towels, swimming trunks, sunscreen, hats & 9 million other random objects, items of clothing, most probably a piece of furniture or 2 (well it just felt like that when i lifted this enormous bag!)

oscar didn't complain about having to find his shoes & even put them on his feet without being prompted, they weren't on the right feet... but i appreciated the effort!

i hopped online to check the address & somehow stumbled on the page that said it doesn't open until may!!!!! i thought no this can't be true, it's easter for goodness sake!! so i rang them & they're closed till may...

it's 9 o'clock in the morning, i have 2 hyped up little boys & i am about to burst their bubble. i call them over & break the news... flynn, 2,  took it remarkably well... oscar, 4, started screaming & crying... then flynn says 'can we go to elmo slides now!' it's going to be a loooooooooooong day!

i ask them if they would like to go to the zoo instead... flynn says yes, but oscar isn't having any of it... i rattle off a list of places & the only one that sparked a twinkle in his eye was chuck e cheese... so off we go... it's a GORGEOUS day & we are going to be stuck indoors in an arcade like setting...

i really dislike that place... & here's why...

my friends came to visit me from MA, yes chris & helen that's you! helen had to go into the city & i took chris, his 2 children & my 2 children to chuck e cheese. this was in the days when flynn was still in the stroller that the car seat clicks on. often when i'd lift flynn out the stroller would fall back from the weight of my overloaded bag. i'd been in a hurry that morning & surprise surprise couldn't find my car keys... so i grabbed the spare & off we went.

we'd played & played on everything, had the yukky food & were more than ready to leave... i looked in the cup holder of the stroller for the car key & it wasn't there... chris in the meantime was putting ski suits on his children in anticipation of going out in the cold to the car. i pull my bag apart looking for the key ~ it's NO WHERE!!! i'm going hot & cold all at once. oscar starts crying because he is so tired & over excited... i asked a member of staff if anyone has handed in a key... nothing. i start looking under rides for it, getting carpet burn on my cheek... i am now panicking!! where the hell is it!!! strangers are going through my bag trying to help me...

then a cheerful chuck e cheese lady comes over & says with a beaming smile, i haven't found your key but i have found LOADS of tokens... mmmmmm!! not helping me... i felt like saying 'great!! go have fun on the rides then!!'

i suddenly thought... what if someone took my key... & my car... but it was still there!

chris's children had super rosy cheeks from wearing their outdoor clothes, oscar's crying had got 10 times worse... & flynn was starting up too...

then this really really nice lady, with about 6 children,  took over & said listen i'll give you a ride home & you can get your spare... so that's what happened. arhhhhhhhhh!! what a wonderful person!!

i never found the key, i wonder where it is... a replacement costs $265

& ok ok... elmo's not stupid!!

[ from russia with love ]

sooooooo... my son oscar, 4, goes to nursery school. he had to bring in something for show & tell today & the theme was russia.

the only real russian thing we have to hand is one of those nesting dolls*, so i got it ready & that morning i explained to him what was going on.

about 2 hours later i had about 6 emails from russian brides!!! & have been getting them continuously ever since!

is it just coincidence or is our house bugged or something!! i'm really amazed... i didn't do a search, or say out loud anything to do with russia until that morning!

* a matryoshka doll, also known as a russian nested doll or a babushka doll, is a set of dolls of decreasing sizes placed one inside the other. the word "matryoshka" (матрёшка) is derived from the russian female first name "matryona" (mатрёна). The word "babushka" (бабушка) is the russian word for grandmother.

[ disney! ~ part 1 ]

soooooo... my husband, mike, had to take off some days from work, or loose them. he really really wanted us to go away somewhere, maximum 3 nights. mike loves the snow, skiing, snowboarding etc etc & was looking into a snowy place... personally, i do like snow, to look at... maybe a short walk in it ~ but then the novelty rapidly wears off! i really should try it, shame the ski suits don't do anything for my butt!! actually do they do anything for anyones!!

my lovely friend ursula said why don't you try disney!!! to tell you the truth, i'd always made the 'vampire cross with my fingers' at the mention of theme parks ~ but the thought of sun, a flight (my boys oscar 4, & flynn 2 would LOVE),  the curiosity (ok i'm nosy!) of disney & imagining their faces taking everything in got me excited !!!

i suggested it to mike... & didn't get the reaction i was hoping for... he didn't say no, but there wasn't a back flip in sight!

i continued looking into it & mike soon got the disney itch!

AAA was by far the best place to get tickets, but you are at the mercy of whoever answers the phone... some people were terrible!!  i hung up on someone when i found myself having to beg them to look up a flight time! why are they in that role?

then i came across jerusha mirarchi who was incredibly helpful!!

we left wednesday, flew from philadelphia ~ got really cheap flights, which we also booked through AAA. the boys LOVED the flight!! flynn was saying 5-4-3-2-1 BLAST OFF non stop till we took off!

the only problem we had was landing... flynn's ears really hurt him & was crying his eyes out... it was really hard to try to get him to swallow or yawn, everyone was very sympathetic expect for the one guy who yelled 'kid why don't you give your mom a break!!'

we get to orlando international & the disney magic beginnings!!! we got the 'magical express bus' that took us to our hotel. (this is a complimentary airport transportation service, and baggage delivery if you stay at a walt disney world resort). we asked where this service was & i really really wanted the guy that answered to have a mickey mouse voice!!!!

the bus dropped us off at our hotel, pop century & this hotel has a bus service to all the parks.

because we procrastinated 24 hours before booking the package we had to get a 'preferred room' instead of a standard ~ which ran us around $90 in total more. mike & i have been spoilt with hotels & fine dining from our previous job, so when i saw our room... i couldn't imagine what our 'preferred' room had that a standard didn't... i found out later the only difference was that it was closer to the food court!

but it served it's purpose ~ very clean, all the things we needed ~ i would definitely stay there again. there was a 24 hour pool too.

so we dumped our bags & went to the hollywood studios ~ very cool! we zipped round & then went on to the contemporary hotel because i made reservations to the califorina grill ~ rated as the best in disney. the only time i could get was 9.25pm so we were hoping the boys would fall asleep in their strollers & leave mommy & daddy to enjoy a lovely meal. of course the boys wouldn't drop off, even with the 92 laps of the lobby... we parked them at our tables. they watched us silently for a while & then both dropped off without a peep! very nice job boys!!!

ok ~ like i said we've been spoilt with hotels & dining... found this place over rated.

but the view is amazing, good service & we really enjoyed the fact the boys were snoozing & we were able to have a nice meal together.

we then left to go back to the hotel & because it was late the way home was to get the bus to downtown disney & then a bus to our hotel.

because the boys were sleeping i was hoping we could lift the strollers onto the bus, but noooooo ~ we weren't allowed... child had to be out of the stroller & stroller folded. this we found hard, we both had a bag, a stroller & sleeping child, now to get everything onto the bus... if we had more than 2 children i don't think we could have done it.

when we arrived at downtown disney the bus back to our hotel was there & my heart sank a bit because i knew we would never make it with all the stuff we had & would have to wait for the next one... but this amazing thing happened... everyone one on the bus picked up our stuff & carried it on to the bus without being asked, mike & i had to just carry the boys! i was really touched by this & found throughout the trip that the visitors were all so friendly & helpful ~ i'm calling this the 'disney spirit'.

next morning,  after a fiasco with the mickey mouse mugs, i didn't know we were only going to get 3 (flynn is 2 so wasn't allocated one, i'd done the line without my purse so couldn't buy one) (then basically flynn held his upside in the stroller & was sat in a puddle) we ventured to the magic kingdom!

in general:
i found there are a lot of 'disney' rules & a lot of people that go year after year so they are familiar with all of these... then 'newbies' like us turn up & hold up queues cos we just didn't understand...

staff all said 'have a magical day!!' i wanted to answer in a goofy voice er okey dokey ~ thanks!!

we got the dinning plan ~ which i really recommend because even the snacks are really expensive. i'm not being funny but i like to enjoy my food when i'm on vacation. with the dining plus plan you get one table-service meal, one quick-service meal and one snack per person, per night & the dining deluxe plan 3 meals and 2 snacks per person, per night of your stay. you can only get a dining plan if you stay in one of the disney resorts.

thanks to my friends ursula, eris & pamela we were armed with great tips & i have to say the best was eris's fast pass one. you can go to a ride that offers fast pass & get a ticket which will allow you to get onto the ride without doing the line if you come within the hour they ask you to. very cool!

disney is amazing!! a totally different world. ok... when i first came to the states i went to vegas... i knew nothing really about it so i had made up in my mind what it was like... & that was like the start of  an austin powers movie... totally crazy, exciting, tumblers, dancing etc etc... i was disappointed!! BUT... disney! this is my vegas!! this is how i expect it to be!

we headed off for a character breakfast at the liberty tree tavern (i wanted the crystal palace one, but that was closed for refurbishment & they'd moved to temporarily to the tavern)

after being asked probably around 63 times, by oscar 'can i have pancakes?' we arrive. ~ we said of course you can!! i mean this is america! pancakes are traditional breakfast fare. minnie mouse, pluto & chip 'n dale are doing the rounds... now this was something i didn't see coming!! both my boys we terrified!!! & started screaming when any of then came in a 2ft radius!! now a look at the menu... 'mum can i have pancakes?' errrrrr actually no... they didn't have any!!! meltdown number one!!! JOY RAPTURE!!!  started thinking what have we done!!! but thank goodness it all got better from here on!!

it's funny though... walking though disney... meltdowns all around!! & the relief that it's not your kid this time & the sympathetic knowing look if you came face to face with the parent... you know the one...

first ride we went on:  it's a small world
walt originally designed the attraction for pepsi to benefit UNICEF at the 1964-65 new york world's fair. when the Fair closed, the attraction made its way to disneyland and was so popular that it was one of the original attractions when Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom opened on October 1, 1971.

the small world song is played over & over while you sail along in a boat watching brightly costumed dolls from every nation you can think of. it's very 'cute'. (i put 'cute' in inverted commas because it's not a word i would usually use... but i can't think of a better one).

i couldn't help but think it would be a great scene for a scary part of a 70's film when the girl is getting chased by the bad guy & she's trying to hide on a ride & 'it's a small world' is being played repeatedly with zoomed in parts of dolls!! arhhhhh!!!

our lunch was at the plaza ~ this was really good! there's a good view of the castle from there too if you sit in the conservatory.

that evening we watched the SpectroMagic parade ~ it was FANTASTIC!! in my emotionally unstable state i had to wipe a tear or two away it was that good. we didn't really know the best place to watch from so we ended up standing in the middle of the square, there wasn't anyone there because everyone  had lined the streets. it was a great place to be because the parade went totally around you & then you could watch it go down main street to the castle. the boys were totally amazed & we were dancing around watching this spectacular! this is one of my fondest memories in my life so far, the sheer excitement of the boys & doing crazy dancing in the middle of a public square whilst being surrounded by an amazing spectacular!

rides we did at the magic kingdom:

it's a small world

dumbo ride! ~ really good, i'm such a wuss though! theres a level that makes dumbo go up & down... & flynn found it! it was fun!!!

mickey's philhar magic ~ this is a 3d film & is amazing!!! it was much better than the 'honey i shrank the audience at epcot)

mad tea party cup ride ~ this was good ~ unfortunately oscar cried the whole way round because he wanted to sit in the red one (nap needed!)

peter pan's flight ~ thumbs up

pirates of the caribbean ~ i was scared!!!! hahahaha!! it's dark! the animatronics are really good here.

adventures of winnie & pooh, the railroad ~ really nice & good rest time!!

swiss tree house, poohs playful spot, cinderellas carousel ~ we all really enjoyed this, mickey & minnie's house, donald's boat

goofy's barnstormer ~ this is a mini roller coaster... oh noooooooooo... oscar really wanted to go on it & so did flynn!! i didn't think he'd be tall enough!! but damn, he was... & i asked about 47 times are you sure you want to get on it... hoping he'd say no (told you i was a wuss!!) it was over quickly... not sure what happened i had my eye shut the whole way!!

jungle cruise ~ unbelievably long zig zag queue... basically a safari boat ride & with the captain doing bad stand up comedy. what was making me chuckle though was mike found these mega cheesy jokes & one liners hilarious!! he was laughing out loud at every single one!! i began to think maybe he'd had too much sun!!

don't miss part 2! ~ epcot & the interesting journey home!

here's jerusha's number in case you get the disney itch too!!

[ dragonfly farms ]

sooooooo... i took the boys to dragonfly farms in hamilton on a beautiful autumn morning & we had a great time! there is a hay maze, i had a bit of trouble running through it, i think this is my wake up call to loose a few pounds! as i'm writing this i'm scoffing a delicious blueberry bagel! yum yum yum ooooooooo whatever!!! anyway it's getting colder which means i need a little extra me to keep warm!!

lots & lots of cool varieties of pumpkins ~ check out the texture in the first photo.

a great petting zoo!! like all petting zoos a lovely authentic aroma!!

but.. best of all is the hayride through the SPOOKY forest. i wooooo-ed all the way through it!!! when we got off i asked my fellow passagers where they got their tickets from... (i kind of sneaked on last minute!) & they said it was FREE!! music to my ears!! i would have wooooo-ed harder!!

up shot is ~ great place to take your little ones for a 'fall' treat!!! my sons 2 & nearly 4 really enjoyed themselves!! they are definitely the perfect ages for this activity.
